I'm pretty sure it's not Joe Pye weed. Got lots of that in the park next door and it's smaller and already blooming. And I can't honestly say it looks like the pictures I found online of a Mexican petunia. The plant is now about 6 feet tall and no blooms yet. Don't all plants have some flowers or buds eventually?? Maybe not.
Wait!! I think Theora might be right. I was mixing up milkweed with joe pye weed. My apologies for doubting your guess. I should know for sure in the next month or so.
